Mayor
of London, Boris Johnson, said: "I was so sorry to hear about
Donald’s accident. He did a wonderfully fair
interview when I was Shadow Higher Education Minister and I wish him
and his family and supporters every success in helping his
rehabilitation."

Donald
was raised in Durham,the
eldest of five, with frequent trips to the family home on the Isle of
Skye. After school in Perthshire he spent a year in New Guinea then
went to Oxford University before embarking on a successful journalistic
career. Beginning on the Durham Advertiser and Newcastle Evening
Chronicle, he then worked on The Scotsman, The Independent and The
Guardian, where he was chief education correspondent and editor. A few
months before the accident he had taken up the post of Communications
Officer for the Russell Group of universities. Don has a wife, Barbara,
three children and two grandchildren.
Accident:On
24th March 2010 he was hit by a car while cycling back to his
London home. He was critically ill and in a coma for several
weeks and has been left severely brain damaged. Initial prognosis was
very depressing. However, Don has confounded the experts: he can now
eat proper meals and feed himself, sit up in a wheelchair for a large
part of the day, hold a pen and attempt to write numbers and letters,
and although he cannot speak, he gives nods and rare beautiful smiles.
He is making his way back and for his family, this is heartening and
remarkable progress.

Fund Raising
This
is a site which arranges discounts for internet
shopping and passes on a percentage of
the retailers' profits to the
cause of your choosing. People can
register their cause as Do It 4 Don and
the fund will get 2.5% for every order, at no
extra cost to the buyer.
Do it for Don Fund:The
progress Don was making was at Putney’s Royal Hospitalfor
Neuro-disability. However, due to the recent cuts his funding has
ceased and he is now in a nursing home in Highgate. At the nursing home
he will receive some physiotherapy and occupational therapy. The fund
has been started by his family to help pay for extra equipment to help
with mobility and therapies such as hydrotherapy, when he is ready.
Basically, the fund will cover the shortfall between what Don now needs
and the NHS provision. Already the fund has passed £18,000,
which is testimony to the affection and respect in which Don is held by
family, friends and colleagues. People are being amazing and generous
in their support and the family are extremely grateful and very touched
by the response.
Don's
family would like to thank Charles, Aidan, Sudor and Lewis for all
their help in making this site.
Don
is an intelligent,gentle
man who has had his life destroyed in a moment when he was looking
forward to spending more time with Barbara, his family and
grandchildren. Any contribution you can make will be warmly welcomed
and appreciated.
